The Sunday School class I attended last week talked about the difference between being blessed and being happy. There also is a great difference between being joyful and being happy. Dwight L. Moody also says it well, "Happiness is caused by things that happen around me, and circumstances will mar it; but joy flows right on through trouble; joy flows on through the dark; joy flows in the night as well as the day; joy flows all through persecution and opposition. It is an unceasing fountain bubbling up in the heart; a secret spring the world can't see and doesn't know anything about. The Lord gives his people perpetual joy when they walk in obedience to him." The Scriptures would bear this truth out. In the first 10 verses on John 15, Jesus spoke of the importance of "abiding" in Him. Abiding means to "stay put, to continue." When we do that our lives will be very fruitful and bring glory to God. Jesus made the point in v10 that if we keep His commandments we will abide in His love. So, abiding requires us to keep God's commandments. Obedience then becomes the way for us to stay close to the Lord, who is our joy. Then, in v11 of John 15 Jesus says, "These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made full." There is no reason, as a follower of Christ, regardless of our circumstances, that we should not be walking in the joy of Jesus Christ. Are you?
